Our Process

Consult & Conceptualize

First, you'll talk with Angela about your ideas and concepts, make fabric selections and look at initial sketches. The consultation fee is $100 and will be applied toward your final purchase price.

Design & Create

Next, Angela will design an original pattern for your garment, and you’ll meet with her for an initial fitting session and additional appointments as required (for draping, etc.).

Fit & Finalize

Then you’ll meet for a final fitting and Angela will make any needed adjustments. Depending on your design, you can expect the entire process to take from 8 to 12 weeks.

Q: What kind of dresses does Angela design?

Asheville Couture by Angela Kim focuses on fine fabrics and beautiful details for the contemporary and romantic bride. We offer both full Custom Design and a Made to Measure Bridal Collection.

Custom Design allows the bride to be a part of creating her bridal vision from sketch through to a completed gown. Our Made to Measure Collection is a semi-customizable collection of gowns allowing the bride to make tweaks to the design to fit her vision and personality.

Q: What is the process of creating a custom wedding dress?

The design process takes anywhere from six to twelve months. Project length is determined by the complexity of each dress and the bride’s timeline. Asheville Couture custom wedding dresses begin at $2,500. This includes materials, fittings, and general alterations. Materials covers fabrics, trims, and accents – from the most delicately fine lace to meticulously patterned embroidery.

The first appointment is all about getting to know you. Your personality, your taste, your wedding style, you and your partner’s story. During this consultation we’ll look over images, brainstorm ideas, and start discerning a vision for your dress.

During our next meeting I’ll present my preliminary ideas for your gown. This is a collaborative process, so together we’ll discuss sketches, fabrics, and finishes. Before you leave we’ll take your measurements, decide on the design, sign our contract, and finalize your timeline and price.

After I’ve taken your measurements and the details are in place, I start with draping a muslin dress pattern. This mock-up helps us both visualize what my sketches will look like in reality. Additionally, it allows us to make any adjustments before I’m working with the fabric. From there I’ll start creating your custom gown!

The length of construction is dependent upon the fabrics we’ve selected; sewing delicate lace, draping flowing silks, sculpting luxurious chiffon, and applying intricate beading all take time. Time is built-in for regular alterations and fittings, which allow you to monitor the evolving design throughout the tailoring process.

Q: How do I prepare for the consultation?

The best way to prepare for our initial consultation is to gather ideas about your personal bridal style.

Ask yourself questions like: What trends am I drawn to? What fabrics do I love? What silhouettes make me feel beautiful? Next, set aside time to research.

Page through bridal magazines, browse Pinterest for ideas, perhaps even try on a few dresses at a boutique. Make sure to take pictures and save examples of what you like and dislike and bring them to our meeting!

Q: Do clients typically have an idea of what they want before reaching out to you or is it more of a collaborative process?

Custom Design allows the bride to develop an inspiration or include key elements that are important to her bridal vision. It can start with the love of a certain fabric, beading, design element or even a silhouette. Each design process is tailored for the bride so there is no wrong way to start as we work together to bring her gown to reality!

Q: Is a mood board typically helpful?

Getting a sense of the bride’s vision for her wedding can be helpful to bring her bridal vision to life and express the feeling she wants her gown to embody.

Q: Once the design is finalized, can you make alterations?

Custom design is an evolutionary process allowing the bride the option to make changes or tweaks to her design through the beginning stages of her gown.
